Google Advance Search Function Demystified

Have you ever searched on Google, of course, you have and with you, over 1.5 Billion people do that every day?  But with such a big number of searches there all almost Trillions of web sites and blogs on Google, which makes it a hefty task to get the right blog post, websites, products or anything that you are looking for.

But no more wasting of time, bouncing from one page to another. With Google Advance search function you can quickly find the right resources that you are looking for.

Here’s how it works, if you type in a specific word or function before your “search query” you filter down unwanted search results and brings out the appropriate website and blogs for you.

So now let’s dig deeper and look for some of the most important function that you could use while searching-

 

Quotes:-

By simply adding quotes (“”) around your search query you trigger the Google search to look for the exact phrase that is between the quotes which give you super-specific results for your query.

For Instances: – “bicycles for teenagers” will give you an absolutely those results which have the exact phrase in them.

If you are still not happy with the result you can use another function like “or”

Or

The word “or” is used for giving options to anybody & in terms of Google search it almost the same. When you use “or” between any two phrases, it indicates the search engine to look for either of the options. You can use this function when you have confusion between words or phrases.

For Instances: – “bikes or bi-cycle” which will show results for both terms.

Minus Sign (-)

The Minus sign function can be used when you are searching for something but want to remove certain search terms from the results.

This function helps you to reduce your search time by a big margin, as all the unwanted search terms and phrases could be directly removed.

For example, “Photo Editing Software-Adobe Photoshop”, this search query will indicate Google that you want to see photo editing software but not by Adobe Photoshop.

City city Function

This is an amazing function if you are a traveller or looking to travel from different cities. It enables you to simply type the names of the two cities and all the flights & trains going between those cities will appear. Isn’t that cool, as it saves up time of looking for airport names, timings and station codes?

For example, just type in “New Delhi Mumbai” and bingo! You have all the trains and flight results waiting for you.

Link

By simply typing in “Link:” Before any URL you direct Google to show up pages which are only connected to the particular URL.

For example, when you search Link:amazon.in, will show all the pages linked from amazon.in

The best thing about this function is that you can use it with other function as well.

This seems a tiny function but trust me it does an excellent job when you are searching for a product.

You can use this function between two numbers and get specific products For Instances, Search for Men Jeans Rupees 500..1000 Rupees, and there you find your perfect pair of jeans.

Map

This function enables you to search only for Maps for a location.

If you use “Map:Location” in the search query it will filter it down to only the location with its Map.

Example, Map:Bandra will show you the map directly without directions.

Cache

This function is not for everyone but for those who want to see last time visit on a particular website and its source and cache snapshot.

Just type in cache:abc.com and you will see the results on the top of the screen.

Stocks

If you are a stockbroker or even an investor, to keep a close watch on share prices can be a tough task. Rather than, opening different apps or signing in, Just Google the Company name by Adding “Stocks: “before it and see the real-time prices on the go.

For Example, Stocks: DLF and the results are in front of you.

By putting in an asterisk before your search query, you can search a specific phrase in an article or a blog post.

This can be useful for searching for any news, important dates or occurring and even blogs.

For Example:- *If you don’t ask, you don’t get it.

In

The in function can be used if you are looking to convert any measurable unit. Just write “In” Between the units and you will see the results.

For Instances, Pounds in Kilograms, and you will the conversion metric of both the units.

Weather

As the name suggests, this function helps you to see the current weather and forecast of any place on the world.

Just type, “weather:NewDelhi” and the weather report will be in front of you.

File Type

This function enables you to search for files on the internet with a specific extension.

Do you remember searching for a jpeg image and once you search you get so many results with png, tif or even HTML format.

But with this function just type the name following with Filetype or Ext function and the results will show the exact file type you are looking for.

For Instances, SEO filetype:jpg/ SEO ext:jpg

Source:

This function searches for mentions of a query in a certain news source.

It allows you to refine your search to a specific topic from a specific channel or media house.

For Instances, New Gadgets source:Digit will give you results from Digit Magazine only.

Allintitle:

This function shows results that have by searching your query in the title tag of their site.

You should use it when you want content with specific titles, such as blog posts or articles. This is especially useful when you want a specific page like a blog post.

For Example, allintitle:Digital Marketing Hacks will search for the exact title.

Intitle:

This function enables you to search for a single term in the title of a page and the other part in the body of the page.

This can be very useful when you are searching for something which is super-specific.

For Example, intitle:SEO Neil Patel  would return results that have “SEO” in the title and “Neil Patel” in the body content

Inblogtitle:

It works almost the same as “allintitle” Function but only searches for blog title to look for.

This is useful when you want results that only include blog posts with a certain word in the title. This ensures that you don’t get news stories or other content formats. Be you have to put your phrase in quotes.

For Example, inblogtitle: “SEO tools in 2020” would show search results that include blog posts with this title

Allinurl:

This function returns search results that have your entire search query in their URLs.

This can be useful when you want to find a specific URL that you know includes one of your terms.

For Example, allinurl:PPC Marketing will search for a website having the whole phrase in it.

Inurl:

By using this function you can easily find out an URL which contains a specific word that you are looking for.

This function differs is a bit  from the “allinurl:” function as it only searches for one word in the URL rather than the whole query.

For Example, inurl:SEO TOOLS, would return results of URLs containing the word “SEO” and that has “TOOLS” somewhere in the content of that URL

Related:

Probably one of the most common and useful functions is related function:  It allows you to see results that are similar to the URL that you search.

This is great for finding sites that are somehow related to your query which can be used for competitor analysis as well as for inspiration from other related websites.

For Example. related:pexels.com would show results that are similar news sites

Info:

This function gives you some vital information about your searched domain. The given information includes similar pages, linked pages, pages with a similar domain, Cache information and URL information etc.

It’s useful when you want to do competitor analysis or simply want to dig deep into a website. You’ll have to follow the links provided after you type the query to get the information.

For Example info: amazon.in would give you information on Amazon India website.

Define:

One of the simplest yet vital functions in Google Advanced Search, the define: function shows definitions of a specific phrase or word.

This allows us to search for the word quickly and without signing up to different online Dictionaries.

For Example:- define: empathy would give you a dictionary definition of the word
